4/25/2023 – Brazilian Football supports Ukraine

From Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 426):

Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy! He who goes out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, bringing his sheaves with him.
Psalm 126:5‭-‬6

I saw this very heartwarming story today. It comes from Brazil, which makes it even more special. Brazil is among the countries that have tight connections with Russia. Their complex relationships with the US and Europe make them view Russia as a good ally against those who had been unfair to them. Statements of the presidents of Brazil over the past year show how controversial their position is toward Ukraine.

However, Brazil has a large population of Ukrainian immigrants (in the 4th and 5th generation), and most of them live in the state of Paraná. Guarapuava, a city in the district of Prudentopolis in Paraná, has a population of 75% Ukrainian origin. This is the largest Ukrainian community in Latin America.

It is no secret how important football (soccer) is in Brazil. Loyalty to your team, the team’s name and colors is of the highest importance, which makes this story even more special.

AA Batel, a team from the Prudentópolis region, decided to take on Mariupol’s kit, crest and logo in a show of solidarity with Ukraine (Mariupol used to have a top-flight football club before the invasion). They vow to keep this name until the Ukrainian team returns to their hometown. AA Batel president says, “Ukraine has always been incredibly supportive of great Brazilian football talent and became an important gateway for players to enter the European market. This is the least we could do to help keep their club alive and give hope to Ukrainians all across the world.”

I am weeping in gratitude. This is such a powerful statement, such a powerful show of solidarity, and such an incredible encouragement. I pray that the news of this act of support will reach those still doubting and will help soften their hearts. May these acts of love speak louder than Russian propaganda, especially in countries with traditionally close ties with Russia.
