5/14/2023 – The night interrupted

It’s the middle of the night. The air is warm enough to leave the window open, yet the breeze makes you shiver, reminding you it’s just the middle of May. The lights in most windows have been turned off for the night. You can hear someone talking in the street as the echo carries their voices across the silence. The frogs croak in a nearby lake, and at times their noise gets so loud that it overpowers any other sound. A perfect spring night. Or is it?

The idyllic setting is interrupted by the wailing of sirens. Someone in the neighboring country can’t fall asleep without terrorizing peaceful Ukrainians, showering them with missiles, and bringing devastation.

We will wait out this air raid. We will take time to rebuild and restore. We will keep on living, even when they try to destroy us.

May our sons in their youth be like plants full grown,
our daughters like corner pillars cut for the structure of a palace;
may our granaries be full, providing all kinds of produce;
may our sheep bring forth thousands and ten thousands in our fields;
may our cattle be heavy with young, suffering no mishap or failure in bearing;
may there be no cry of distress in our streets!
Blessed are the people to whom such blessings fall!
Blessed are the people whose God is the Lord!
