8/22/2023 – Joys and Sorrows

From Lyuda in Belgorod Dnestrovsky (Day 544):

“The earth is the LORD’s, and the fulness thereof; the world, and they that dwell therein.” Psalms 24:1

Yesterday Sergey preached on the 24th psalm and talked about whether God hears our voice when we call to Him, how we can approach God, “ascend into the hill of the Lord” and “stand in His holy place”.

Pastor Sergei

We had a very good weekend, full of meetings, music and joy. God blessed us so abundantly. Our good friend and brother in Christ Jean-Marie Leroy came to Ukraine from France and made a tour over our western cities with organ concerts finally coming to our town. We were very glad to see our friend, who had already made several visits to Ukraine since the beginning of the war, bringing help and encouraging us with concerts.

Jean-Marie Leroy

On this visit, he has already given 10 concerts, bravely visiting cities that are less safe than our town.

Our church was full of people who came for the concert on Saturday, it was a big event for our community. First of all because we do not have many interesting events now and people mostly live in the atmosphere of sad news. And also it was an amazing time spent in the presence of God, listening to the music inspired by Him and devoted to Biblical events.

I could see the faces and the eyes of people when I made the announcements of each piece of music. People who live in sorrow, grief and despair radiated joy, peace, comfort and love. The next day we saw many of the people who came to the concert at our worship service. It was a real gift from the Lord for them and for us.

Throughout the past week I was gradually adjusting to the time and to my lifestyle after the trip. I was glad to see the progress in the Refugee Center. The second living zone needed much more time for the renovation work and very soon the second family will move in. I was glad to see Sergey and Svetlana, the family that is already living in the center. Sergey does not feel well and needs our prayers. Svetlana made me glad with the news. She applied to the course of children’s psychology in one of Odessa universities. She is encouraged by the work of our psychologists and wants to participate in our work helping the children.
It was also nice to meet new families of refugees that joined our group last month.

I was especially impressed by a young girl, Kate, who came with her mother and two sisters. They stay in our church guest room. Kate does not have fingers on one hand (she was born with this problem) and she got used to hide her hand behind her back. But she is very open and positive. She immediately became a part of our youth group as if she knew them all for years. From the first days she asked our church musician Svetlana to give her singing lessons and during our Sunday worship she was on the stage with other girls singing the glory to the Lord.

But there are also many sad things that bring tears and sadness. The enemy continues to bomb our cities. In the south, he is trying to destroy our ports and grain reserves. From numerous videos and messages from the front, we see how tired our soldiers are, how hard it is for them to get every meter of ground when they move forward. Now, when there is an intense heat, they feel very hot in the ammunition they wear.

I was glad to see in the church Paul Lukoshkin, who came for a short vacation home. Our youth group was very happy to be with him. Paul was not very talkative and I decided not to bother him with my questions, and just spent some time sitting next to him as he was adjusting the sound system before the worship service. May God give him rest and peace during these days at home.

Please, continue to pray for our ministry, for our soldiers and for the Victory.
We thank all people who support us with prayers and donate for our ministry.

  1. Dear Lyuda,
On Friday evening, our church had a special hymn night with deep gospel filled songs, as we sang each song, it was so uplifting to sing about the love of God and the hope we have when we suffer here on earth. Each song,
I thought of Ukraine and prayed! Even thought of how wonderful it would be to bring gospel filled choirs for encouragement to Ukraine. Music is such a gift and comfort from the Lord.
And how encouraging to see your post about how God blessed your church with music as well!
I’m continually praying for your ministry, for the soldiers and for a complete victory for Ukraine!
    Love in Christ,
    Jill
