8/28/2023 – After 550 days, we have returned to Kyiv to stay…

Today’s picture — our makeshift bed in the hallway in case of an air raid warning at night

From Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 550):

Know that the Lord, he is God!
It is he who made us, and we are his;
we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture.
Psalm 100:3

This day has come. After 550 days, we have returned to Kyiv to stay. Over the past four months, we have visited our home a few times, but it was different. So, I am now trying to process my thoughts and feelings.

When we left on February 24, 2022, we didn’t know what to expect and wanted to get our son to a safe place. God was faithful in this, showing us we were right where He wanted us to be. However, after 18 months of the full-scale invasion, we knew it was time to return. It’s impossible to predict how long this war might last (especially considering it started in 2014), and we don’t want our son to spend this time alienated from his friends and school.

As we readjust to living back home, we also wonder about the best way to set up “home improvements” if an air raid warning comes at night. There are so many “what ifs” and a lot of uncertainty ahead, but I keep reminding myself that God was faithful before and will be faithful to the end, for He does not change.

For the Lord is good;
his steadfast love endures forever,
and his faithfulness to all generations.
Psalm 100:5
