9/2/2023 – Crimea is part of who we are, and we miss it greatly, no matter the age…

Today’s picture — Ukrainian flag in Crimea. Photo by Zhovta Strichka (Yellow Ribbon), the underground resistance movement in the occupied territories.

From Ira Kapitonova in Kyiv (Day 555):

Seek the Lord and his strength;
seek his presence continually!
Remember the wondrous works that he has done,
his miracles, and the judgments he uttered,
Psalm 105:4‭-‬5

Working on a project with my students today, I had another “reality check” moment. We were talking about different interesting places in Ukraine, and I mentioned Crimea. Several students immediately said that Crimea was occupied the year (or even the month) they were born, and another student said that his mom told him she used to go to Crimea on vacation before it was taken away from us. These children have never lived in a war-free Ukraine (even if the war used to be distant), and Crimea is something they know only from the stories their parents had shared with them.

To some, Crimea is just a piece of land that’s not worthy to fight for, but for us, it is part of who we are, and we miss it greatly, no matter the age.
