5/9/2024 — It’s beyond my understanding how the opposites can coexist side by side in this world…

Today’s picture is a snapshot from Ukraine’s performance in the Eurovision song contest. The “fireworks” on stage are actually intended to resemble something we may witness during Russian attacks.

From: Ira Kapitonova (Day 805):

‭Give ear to my prayer, O God,
and hide not yourself from my plea for mercy!
Attend to me, and answer me;
I am restless in my complaint and I moan,
because of the noise of the enemy,
because of the oppression of the wicked.
For they drop trouble upon me,
and in anger they bear a grudge against me.
My heart is in anguish within me;
the terrors of death have fallen upon me.
Psalm 55:1-4

It’s beyond my understanding how the opposites can coexist side by side in this world – beauty and destruction, peace and anxiety, hope and despair. Our day may look ordinary, or fun and exciting, or quiet and careless, yet all of that is in stark difference from the night or dawn.

This morning, at the crack of dawn, the russians launched another massive missile attack on Ukraine. 22 drones terrorized our people at night, wearing out our air defense, and then 55 missiles were launched from different directions. Our air-defense forces took down 39 missiles (and almost all of the drones), but damage has been done to our power infrastructure. There was a warning about potential blackouts in the evenings.

Later today, they launched ballistic missiles at Kharkiv. They hit an educational institution and other civilian infrastructure. Some teenagers were playing soccer at the sports grounds. The missile came before the air raid warning. The three teenage boys, 12, 13, and 15 years old, are in a hospital, all of them in a critical condition.

Eight hundred days in a row, this kind of news blends in, turning into a blur with no end in sight.

Cast your burden on the Lord,
and he will sustain you;
he will never permit the righteous to be moved.
Psalm 55:22

  1. Beauty and destruction exist side by side so that we can appreciate beauty more and take comfort in beauty when destruction tempts us to despair.
