Western countries should have supplied Ukraine with more weapons before Russia’s 2022 invasion and especially immediately after the attack began, former NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said in an interview with the Financial Times on Oct. 4.

The former official described three objectives he pursued as Secretary-General during the Russo-Ukrainian war: advocating military aid to Ukraine, informing the Western public about the threat posed by Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, and avoiding a nuclear war between NATO and Russia. Journalists noted that the latter clearly hindered the first two goals.

“If there’s anything I in a way regret and see much more clearly now is that we should have provided Ukraine with much more military support much earlier,” said Stoltenberg.

“I think we all have to admit, we should have given them more weapons pre-invasion. And we should have given them more advanced weapons, faster, after the invasion. I take my part of the responsibility.”
