First, I don’t think we’ve seen a video like this. It seems Putin was caught off guard by this question, and honestly admitted the real reason why Russia invaded Ukraine.

It was about pride. It was ego. It was because the West did not respect Russia enough.

Putin‘s argument in his answer has nothing to do with security. It’s all about status and hierarchy. Putin admits he felt Russia was losing status (and he must have felt this way for over a decade as building up troops became his priority). He did not like or appreciate and could not except that Russia is a secondary (now tertiary) status country.

He wanted to show the world that Russia was something more, an empire, a force to be reckoned with.

In short, this was about pride.

Hundreds of thousands are dead, and millions of lives are utterly destroyed because this week, little child had his feelings hurt that he wasn’t part of a big boy club anymore.

Second, I think that the BBC’s @bbcstever is one of if not the last English reporters in Russia, who are able to show a fraction of reality behind the complete curtain of propaganda.
