The New York Post, long regarded as U.S. President Donald Trump’s favorite newspaper, published a July 4 editorial urging him to rearm Ukraine, warning that Russian dictator Vladimir Putin “only understands strength.”
“Mr. President [Donald Trump], we know you understand that the main obstacle to peace in Ukraine is Russian aggression,” the editorial said. “You said you were ‘disappointed’ in the conversation with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin, and that you ‘don’t think he’s looking to stop’.”
According to the editorial, Putin reiterated in the call with Trump that he would not consider a ceasefire until the “root causes” of the war were addressed.
“For Vlad [as the paper referred to Putin], the ‘root cause’ is the existence of Ukraine,” the authors wrote.
The Post directly questioned Trump’s current approach to the war: “Why is your administration punishing Ukraine?”
